Welcome!

Caius Boat Club, founded in 1827, is the rowing club of Gonville and Caius College, University of Cambridge.

Caius Boat Club is the largest Sports team in Caius, with more freshers starting rowing than any other sport or club.

We hold a strong position as one of the fastest Rowing teams in Cambridge, our 1st VIII remained unbeaten in college rowing in the season 2010/11, and we pride ourselves on taking students from their first strokes all the way to representing the university. Every year many students join Caius who already row, and become members of a strong squad system.

Anyone is welcome to row for Caius, to get involved, click here.

If you already row, and are thinking of applying to Caius then contact us at applications@caiusboatclub.org for information and advice.

The club also hosts the college's fireworks night, runs the boatie cocktails, swaps regularly with the boat clubs of other colleges and runs the termly Boat Club Dinners.

Caius Boat Club is well funded and runs a large boathouse on the River Cam, containing top of the range racing shells, a fully equipped weightlifting gym and host of other fitness equipment.

We are proud to be sponsored by:

 Champs Head Race Report

Race Results & ReportsChamps Head: M1 win their division with the fastest time of the day, and, as a bonus, take the prize for the most impressive men's start! Rowing well into variable conditions with a cross-headwind down the course, we're looking forward to the rest of the term. We're honoured to be the first crew to receive the John Stewart trophy in memory of John Stewart, a rower at Champion of the Thames.

On the women's side, a relatively light W1 fared worse than other crews did into the gusty headwind, 8th in their division, and hope to improve after an unsettled period. W2 came out 5th in their division and are pleased to be making progress. Four weeks to the Mays - bring them on!

M2 were the 3rd fastest M2 and are glad to be right back in the mix. M3 raced for the first time as their crew and had some positives to take from the commitment in the row.

 Lent Bumps, WeHoRR

Race Results & ReportsFirst things first: M1 retain the headship. Downing put up an almighty fight on the final day, and a raging headwind on the long reach changed the character of the race. Eventually Caius pulled away after a long and gruelling fight.

Meanwhile W1 performed admirably to rise 2 places, and perhaps could have gone further if the draw had been kinder to them. The girls have progressed enormously this term and look a fantastic crew. They exemplified this by travelling to London on the Saturday and placing in the top 100 at WeHoRR, top Cambridge college.

M2 ended the week level, not acquiring quite the result they had hoped for. After such a strong showing at Pembroke Regatta and Fairbairns, the boys will hope to make better progress up the charts in Mays.

W2 also stayed level, and recorded their first bump in several years! The girls also acquitted themselves well on the tricky tideway course.

M3 showed typical Caius class, rowing with great devotion and enthusiasm. To come home with foliage on the final day, despite having two last minute subs in for injury, shows that there will always be a spare oar or two around the college willing to muck in for the CBC. A great effort!

The Boat Club Dinner was it's usual exuberant self, with much well deserved back-patting and the award of another set of 9 university medals, as well as some delightful prose by our eloquent treasurer Jimmy Altham, the first eight having carried his name on their oars this week.

All in all, a fantastic week for the CBC.

 Lent Bumps Preview

Crew NewsCrew lists are now up! This bumps, don't forget to keep up to date on Facebook and twitter. There you'll be able to get live updates from the river. You can also listen in on CamFM.

Well, here we are again: Lent Bumps, in the midst of some unseasonable warm weather: a real turnaround will be required to ensure the usual torrential downpour (with optional hailstones) comes to pass.

On The rowing front, Caius were dominated this term by an unexpected opponent: frozen water. The Cam decided to freeze us out, causing crews to miss a lot of mileage. Thanks to some effective land training, the time was not squandered however, and the crews came out of hibernation in time for Pembroke Regatta (having missed Newnham Short Course, Robinson Head, Head of the Nene etc.). The crews, largely unchanged since seat-racing in Peterborough before the freeze, showed their class, and Caius took home the top 3 divisions of the competition: M1, W1 and M2. This being the only real comparative result since Fairbairns there is little to help predict the ensuing carnage that is Lent Bumps. Hopes are high that Caius will come out with some great results.
Both M2 and W1 will be aiming for blades, though as the old maxim goes "good crews go up three, lucky crews go up four". Meanwhile M1 will be aiming to maintain the Lents headship that they won last year, with their memorable 4 bumps up to the headship station.

The lower boats were perhaps harder hit by the freeze out, not having had as much time to gel. Despite this, W2 are the best prepared that they have been for bumps in the last 3 years, with some strong fresher talent and some all-important bumps-experience in the stern. M3 will be hoping to maintain their upwards trajectory, also combining fresh talent with seasoned experience: stroked by the inimitable Joe Taylor, whose considerable experience in the Gentleman's eight (up 9 in Mays 2010!) makes the crew a force to be reckoned with.

W1 and W2 have the added obstacle of Women's Eights Head of the River to contend with: after four days of rowing the Bumps course, they will decamp to London to try their hand at the Championship course on the tideway, racing the 6.8km to Putney against the top women's club and university crews in the UK, including the Cambridge women's Blue boat, featuring our own Fay Sandford.

Caius Boat Club goes into bumps with every crew looking to move onwards and upwards. We can only hope that the chaos of bumps sees us safely through to Saturday!

 Pembroke Regatta 2012

Race Results & ReportsCaius Win Pembroke Regatta in W1, M1 and M2

Further cementing the Caius Men's Squad's reputation at the top of Cambridge college rowing, the men won the M1 and M2 divisions of Pembroke regatta in a string of side by side wins that the Cambridge tab described as "unsurprising" and "predictable".

M1 beat Clare, in the only easily verdict of the day in M1, to be challenged by an exceptionally fast Girton crew in the second round. Despite Caius gaining strongly off the start the Girton boys held on, driving into the second half of the race with admirable gusto and a powerful leg drive, refusing absolutely the possibility of giving up and slacking off, as losing crews often do in college rowing. The margin records them as the second fastest crew of the day: a fact I believe will be confirmed in the bumps. Our best row of the day then saw us take the much hyped crew from LMBC by a decent margin. In the final, Downing came off second best, the race going down in similar fashion to the previous year.

M2 saw their way through their division relatively unstressed, and perhaps would have been better placed in the M1 division, this would however have reduced their chances of gaining the coveted Pembroke Tankards.

The biggest story of the day was the continued success of the Caius women, whose new coaching and training has seen them rise to the top of Cambridge women's rowing with remarkable speed. Not only did the men beat Downing today, but so did the Women: a truly phenomenal result. The women went on to win the final in a hard and close fought race against Christs. Big things are now expected of the girls, especially considering their start position in Lents: 10th!

The whole club waits with anticipation for the Lent Bumps!

cheers,
EDC

 Winter Head to Head

Race Results & ReportsCaius Dominant at Winter Head to Head.

Caius Women take the top spot today, both in our race report and on the river, a truly landmark achievement for the Club. With a strong row in dirty water, The Caius W1 crew took their opposition to sword and came through with an immense margin over their competitors, over the 2 by 2000m race.

They beat Clare, City, Christ's, Pembroke, Xpress, Catz, 99s, Murray Edwards, FaT, Queens, Emmanuel, Selywn, Magdalene, Cantabs, Kings, Tit Hall, as well as some M2 crews (and Wolfson M1...). So this is no easily won victory. The 37 second margin to the next fastest women's eight is also encouraging: Giles Moon is going to be insufferably smug!

M1a and M1b, our two Caius Squad eights, also acquitted themselves well, Taking the top spot and the 5th spot. Only Downing, Queens and Selywn intervened. M1b will certainly be out to beat Selywn this term, especially once the lineup settles and they move into the Barabino. M1a came through 13 seconds clear of Downing, an acceptable margin, but it carries a lot of room for improvement, with selection still a week or two off. Frustratingly, neither the lightweights or Cantabs raced.

W2 also raced well, coming the top Women's Mays Div 3 crew and 3rd Women's W2 overall. With a new coach and a lot of commitment, this boat is expected to have a very strong term, and even having 8 truly committed rowers is a great step after Lent terms past.

 Caius Dominate Fairbairn Cup

Race Results & ReportsThe Caius Senior Men dominated the Fairbairn cup, the 1st VIII beating the University Lightweight Crew, all Cambridge College crews, and the Pembroke (Oxon) crew that beat the Oxford lightweights so soundly the week before.

The 2nd VIII meanwhile came 8th out of all Cambridge college crews, beating the 1st VIIIs of such previously reputable institutions as Trinity, Pembroke and Trinity Hall.

As such the men's squad is in a fantastic mood and eager to capitalise on this ground over the Winter break. With all three of our male triallists rowing in the trial eights, further speed for the Lent Bumps will very much have to come from within the squad... and the other 3 non-trialling rowers who may join us next term.

Meanwhile in the Women's side we saw the most succesful results since 2006, half a decade ago! The women's 1st VIII came 6th, but were 4th to the half way mark, which is closer to that oh so important Bumps distance. All this bodes very well for the Lent Bumps, where the girls are starting 10th. The women's four also did well, despite being composed of the club's 3rd four women (after the two in the eight), it beat four college 1st IVs!

In the novices, the women stole the show, coming 4th! A truly outstanding result with much to credit to their immensely popular LBCs. This was in fact faster than the second men's novice eight! Shame on you boys! The top men's novice eight ended 16th after some very poor luck involving a lost blade.

 Fairbairns Preview

Announcements
Well it's that time of year once again, Fairbairns is upon us, after a tempestuous Clare Novices (terrible conditions led to some undeserved results), and a very successful Winter Head, The CBC heads into fairbairns in good shape.

Crew Lists are also now up!

The Women's side looks set for a game changing result (touch wood),in both the novices and seniors, and will hope to be moving considerably up the start order for next year's races after strong showings at Winter Head, Autumn head (and Queens' Ergs!).
The women's novices especially have the chance to break the trend of recent women's novicing at caius, and despite an unlucky Clare Novices, should have their sights set on the top, hopefully their poor luck will provide extra determination.

The Men's side has had a more mixed term than they might be used to: An alarmingly poor start by the 1st four in the Autumn Head, that was rescued to see a dead heat in the final of the University Fours against Queens, shows that success comes only from hard graft, and that there are no laurels to rest on. The crew that won Winter Head sees two changes going into The Fairbairn Cup. Without the blazing Cantabs crew that has so impressed this term, the top spot is there for the taking.
The 2nd VIII has been unlucky not to collect silverware this term so far, losing very narrowly at both head races, Fairbairns seems the ideal time to strike.
In the Novice men, the usual placing (top 6) was accomplished at Queens' Ergs, and a strong showing at Winter Head gives hope that a fine Fairbairns result can be accomplished, in line with recent records (3rd, 2nd, 3rd).

History and the Archives of CBC

AnnouncementsYour boat club needs YOU!

Caius Boat Club has long been one of the most popular and successful societies of Gonville & Caius College, and in the past twenty years it has been arguably the most successful boat club on the Cam. But imagine if, in years to come, the only people to remember that were those of us lucky enough to have been there at the time.

At present we are in danger of this becoming the case: it has become apparent that the past twenty years of CBC's history is only sparsely documented in the College's archives (including a number of fantastic headships and most of the history of women's rowing at Caius). We are very keen to improve the records but in order to do this we need your help. So what can you do?

Firstly, pass the message on; the more Caians are aware of this and able to participate, the more complete a picture we will be able to build. Secondly, please contribute as much of the following information as possible about your time at CBC:

- Results - Fairbairns, Lents and Mays are always the club's primary focus, but any information on other major events attended (Head of the River; Henley) would also be brilliant.

- Crew lists - be it M1 or W5 (have we ever had one?), we'd like to know who raced in what boat and when, and any additional information you can give us about them (we know the weights of most of the men who rowed for CBC in the first half of the twentieth century, though currently not the names of those from the last decade!), as well as details of who was on the club committee and anyone who rowed for the University.

- Photographs - of CBC crews, races and victories; and of some social events, particularly crew shots from Boat Club Dinners.

Please email any contributions to me at kjm49@cam.ac.uk with 'CBC' and the relevant year in the subject. Any non-digital photographs can be posted to the College archives (at Gonville & Caius College, Trinity Street, Cambridge, CB2 1TA), either as copies or as originals to be copied and returned, but please email ahead so we know to expect them. If you have any questions, queries or thoughts, please do not hesitate to contact me on the above address, or else the archives directly at archivist@cai.cam.ac.uk.

Thank you so much for your co-operation, hoping to hear from many of you soon!
